The early weeks of pregnancy are a time of rapid growth and development. Certain nutrients are particularly important in the first trimester to support you and your growing baby. As a pregnancy nutritionist, I support my clients in understanding which nutrients are especially important at each stage of pregnancy. In the first trimester, these three nutrients deserve extra attention.
Folate
Folate is crucial for the prevention of neural tube defects. The neural tube closes in the early weeks of pregnancy, before many even realize they’re pregnant! This is why it’s ideal to start taking a prenatal vitamin with folate prior to conception.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a key role in implantation, supports immune function, and helps build strong bones. Some people are deficient, especially during the winter months, so getting your vitamin D levels checked can help you understand your specific needs. The amount of vitamin D included in prenatal vitamins varies widely, so it’s especially important to understand if you are consuming the right amount for you.

Iodine
Iodine is essential for thyroid hormone production. This is particularly important in early pregnancy when baby’s thyroid has not yet developed and is completely reliant on maternal thyroid. Iodine is also important for baby’s brain development. Despite its importance, many prenatal vitamins are missing iodine!
Always consult your doctor or dietitian before adjusting your diet or supplements. Individual needs vary, and personalized guidance can make a significant difference.
