Homemade Sweetened Almond Milk

I recently shared a post on how to make plain, unsweetened almond milk and some of the benefits and drawbacks of making your own almond milk. If you missed it, you can find my previous post here. Homemade almond milk is an alternative to store bought milk and is also very easy to make. Plain, unsweetened almond milk tastes pretty bland by itself, which is not surprising because it is only made with two ingredients- almonds and filtered water. If you prefer a little more flavor, then try this homemade sweetened almond milk. Medjool dates and cinnamon naturally sweeten and flavor this almond milk and it contains no refined sugar.

What You’ll Need to Make Homemade Sweetened Almond Milk:

Raw Almonds: You will, of course, need almonds to make homemade almond milk! I prefer to use raw almonds.

Filtered Water: You will also need filtered water to make the almond milk.

Dates: The key ingredient to sweeten this recipe is fresh, medjool dates. The dates naturally sweeten the almond milk so it contains no refined sugar.

Cinnamon: Cinnamon spice gives this almond milk a delicious flavor.

Nut Milk Bag: You will need a nut milk bag to filter out the almond pulp from the almond milk. I used Ellie’s Best Bigger Better Nut Milk Bag that I was gifted by Ellie’s Best. If you’d like to try Ellie’s Best nut milk bags, take a look at my Discount Codes for 10% off. This is the only bag that I have ever used to make almond milk and it worked great!

How to Make Homemade Sweetened Almond Milk:

  1. Soak almonds and dates in 1 cup of water in the refrigerator overnight.
  2. Remove the soaked almonds and dates from the fridge and strain. Rinse the almonds and dates.
  3. In a high speed/powered blender, add almonds, dates, 4 cups of filtered water, and cinnamon. 4 cups of water is the starting point, but you can add more or less water depending on how watery or creamy you want to make your almond milk.
  4. Blend the mixture for a few minutes until the water turns white (the color of almond milk) and the almonds and dates are fully blended.
  5. Place nut milk bag over a large bowl. Pour the contents in the blender into the nut milk bag. The almond milk will filter through into the bowl and the almond pulp will remain in the nut milk bag. Squeeze and twist the nut milk bag repeatedly to remove all of the almond milk. If you want to reduce food waste and repurpose the almond pulp, check out my Spirulina Almond Pulp Bars and No Bake Brownies recipes.
  6. Using a funnel, pour the sweetened almond milk into storage container of your choice- I used a large mason jar. Store in the fridge and use within 4-5 days.
