Eating seasonal typically means eating local. There are several benefits to this way of eating. Local food does not travel as far to get to you. As a result, eating local reduces transportation and the harmful effects to the environment associated with transporting goods long distances. Additionally, the shorter travel distance also needs that the produce is not harvested until it reaches its peak ripeness (and maximum nutrient content). Produce in grocery stores is typically picked before it is ripe so that it will be in the perfect ripe condition once it is sitting on the store shelves. However, picking produce prior to its peak ripeness is at the expense of the produce’s nutrient potential.
