It tastes like and has the consistency of chocolate frozen yogurt, but is loaded with fruits, veggies, and healthy fats. The recipe is gluten free and dairy free and can be made in less than 3 minutes! All you have to do is blend the ingredients and enjoy! It is perfect for a quick and easy healthy breakfast on the go.
Note: This recipe is labeled as vegan, but is topped with bee pollen (optional). If you are trying to follow a vegan diet, you may want to skip the bee pollen topping.
So how does this smoothie bowl taste like chocolate frozen yogurt?
The fruits in this smoothie are frozen bananas and a medoolan date (optional), which give it the perfect amount of sweetness. Frozen bananas taste amazing in smoothies! They add the perfect amount of sweetness and really make the smoothie taste like ice cream. I definitely recommend freezing banana slices vs. adding raw bananas and ice. Frozen bananas give the smoothie bowl a much better flavor and consistency. I love sweetening my recipes with medoolan dates. They taste naturally sweet and also contain fiber. Make sure the date is pitted prior to blending!
The frozen riced cauliflower gives the smoothie a creamy texture without adding any flavor! That’s right, you get all of the benefits of eating this cruciferous veggie, without even tasting it. Frozen riced cauliflower makes the smoothie thick and creamy, giving it the perfect consistency.
The cacao powder is responsible for the chocolaty flavor of this smoothie bowl. Let’s get one thing straight- cacao is not the same as cocoa. While cacao and cocoa both come from the same place, the way they are processed impacts their nutritional content. Cacao products are generally less processed and a healthier alternative to cocoa. Cacao powder has a rich chocolaty taste but is full of minerals and can have antioxidant effects. It does taste bitter by itself so the frozen banana is key to balancing it out with the right amount of sweetness to make it taste like a treat.
Healthy Fat (optional)
It is optional to add nut butter or avocado as a healthy fat addition to this smoothie bowl. Healthy fats help make you feel satisfied and keep you feeling full for longer. The avocado also makes the smoothie taste so rich and creamy without adding flavor!
Almond milk is the liquid used to blend this smoothie together. I like topping this smoothie bowl with cacao nibs and bee pollen to add the perfect amount of crunch.
